Keira Knightley has said she will not appear in nude scenes for films that have a male director.
Speaking to the Chanel Connects podcast, the actress said: “I don’t have an absolute ban [on filming nude scenes], but I kind of do with men.
“It’s partly vanity and also it’s the male gaze,” the 35-year-old explained.
Knightley has previously revealed she has had a “no nudity clause” added to her film contracts since becoming a mother in 2015.
Now I know the first time I ever clapped eyes on Ms. Knightley was in the Pirates of the Caribbean films where she showed a modest amount of cleavage. Oh, how that was a lie she sold to us all.
In all honesty Keira Knightley no longer filming nude scenes is no great loss as there are more lumps and bumps on a straight-edged ruler. I am, and have never been, a great fan of seeing her with her clothes off – she is one of only a handful of actresses who look better with their clothes on.
Having said everything I’ve said, I still respect her for what she did regarding the photoshopping of actresses bodies – it isn’t right or fair on the actress or those of us who later found out her boobs were not quite so voluptuous as they looked.
However, to say that she would only consider it for a female director because of the “male gaze” is somewhat off the mark. Does she think that just because the director is female and there are no males in attendance when it is filmed (other than those that have to be) it will mean that guys are not going to watch the film – or knowing Ms. Knightley’s films, obtain screen caps instead – just for the boobies? No. Because boobs.
If you don’t like appearing nude then don’t accept roles that involve it. Otherwise pocket those $$$$ and don’t give a fuck. If you don’t then some other actress surely will.
